The Legacy of Peterbilt Trucks in the U.S. Trucking Industry

Peterbilt Motors Company was founded in 1939 when T.A. Peterman, a lumber magnate from Tacoma, Washington, purchased the assets of Fageol Motors with the goal of building reliable trucks to move logs more efficiently. Peterman’s vision was to create robust, purpose-built trucks for heavy-duty use—a concept that quickly found traction across industries beyond logging.

Peterbilt became known for its strong, lightweight aluminum cabs and its signature styling, especially the iconic long-nose conventional models that became symbols of the American highway. The company focused on building trucks that could handle the rigors of long-distance hauling and demanding work environments.

In 1958, Peterbilt was acquired by PACCAR Inc., which also owns Kenworth. Under PACCAR, Peterbilt continued to grow and refine its reputation for high-performance, customizable trucks. Its dedication to driver comfort, advanced technology, and quality construction helped shape the expectations of modern fleet operators and owner-operators alike.

Peterbilt played a key role in powering the growth of America’s logistics, freight, and construction sectors. Its trucks helped move goods coast-to-coast, haul equipment to job sites, and support vital infrastructure projects. The brand became a favorite among independent truckers and large carriers alike for its blend of performance, durability, and style.

Today, Peterbilt is a symbol of American trucking heritage and continues to support industries nationwide through innovation, reliability, and a deep understanding of the needs of drivers and businesses on the road.
